                  Wycliffe Bowls Club History

Formed in 1956 as part of the Follsain Foundry Sports & Social Club, employees created a four-rink bowling green on unused foundry land.

In 1982 the Foundry was forced to close. The Bowling Club continued to function, playing all its matches away and raising funds to find its own independent site.

Eventually it leased land adjacent to the Lutterworth Town Football Club pavilion, off Dunley Way. The area was large enough to

create a six-rink bowling green.

The Chairman of the Leicestershire County Council at that time officially opened the new green in 1985. The membership increased and they enjoyed bowling there until around 1990. At this time, the Football Club decided to sell its whole site and move to the current Hall Lane address.

The football club built its own very substantial clubhouse and car park. The new bowling green was situated on a triangular area of land bounded by the A426 and Hall Lane

The Bowling Club purchased the land giving itself absolute security of tenure, which could then provide its own car parking, together with room to extend its clubhouse when appropriate.

The Bowling Club is now well established with growing male and female membership. A brick clubhouse has been built using members labour.

This year we celebrate our “Jubilee”.
